In my country, most apartment complexes, hospitals, factories, schools, malls, office locations, and temples are surrounded by walls. Some walls are high, some are broken, some have holes, some wall tops have barbed wires, some are pierced with sharp glass pieces, and some have a series of step-formations.
Some walls are covered with green moss, some have plants growing through them, some have graffiti, some have movie posters, some have advertisements, and some have social messages on them.
And during elections, the walls are covered with candidate posters, party symbols, and promises. Promises on the wall or writings on the wall? Heavy stone statues of lions or dogs sit atop some walls to SCARE thieves and burglars.
I've also seen movies where walls are used as interesting props in comical scenes, stunt scenes, robber-chase scenes, family drama scenes, etc.
What would happen if there are no walls?
While I live in a moderately walled city, I’ve also seen cities where properties do not have walls. People in those cities use some smart and beautiful landscaping to define property boundaries. And, I’ve also heard about places where walls divide and rule. Yes, I know the Berlin wall is gone. I bow in reverence to the Wall of Prayer in Jerusalem. I am in awe of the Great Wall of China. The Wall of Silence at Pathankot evokes many emotions.
It’s not about not building walls. It’s about building walls that connect, inspire, and deliver.
It’s okay if a wall is cold to touch but warm in purpose.
