Hot, arid land covered with tall dry grass and wild shrubbery. If you are not watchful, you might step on a snake or a scorpion.
I am here with my team to oversee the installation of the radio transmission tower. It’s fascinating to watch the steel and lattice structure being assembled and installed.
Hard-working locals, who are assisting my team, invite us over to their simple, clean houses for our afternoon meal. We are served food on shining steel plates. Huge, thick rotis, a vegetable, a powder pickle, a glass of water, and a refreshing glass of cool butter milk. With stomach and heart filled with gratitude, we go back to the site and continue our installation work.
I make repeat visits to this tower during my tenure at the radio station. Sometimes, we fix a fault. Sometimes, we carry out routine maintenance work. Sometime, I just go there and watch my tower.
At night, the stillness of the landscape makes me feel uneasy. Not sure of the snakes and scorpions. However, being near my tower puts me at ease.

Someone’s tickling my feet...
The view is fantastic. But now I feel lonely. I miss being cared for by my engineer. A thin, balding guy. Very caring, very sharp, very intelligent.
Now, someone is tickling my knee...
Phew! the voices in my head. In those days, news readers had good diction and good vocabulary. And then there used to be intellectual discussions and debates, melodious folk songs and instrumental music. Now-a-days, lot of fast music, too fast for me to even understand the meaning. And I don’t look forward to the daily news anymore. So, I tune back into my melodious music channel.
Yippee! Someone is tickling my tummy...and this is very ticklish.
Am sweating. Hey Windy! Can you hear me? Would you care sending some cool breeze my way? Mighty hot over here.
Sure! Tower guy! Let me rev up my motor for you. Normally, I wait for the wind to do my rotating act. But since you have been playing some of my favourite numbers non-stop, how can I not heed your request.
Wow! Thanks Windy! The breeze is really refreshing. So, tell me more about your rotating act. Doesn’t your head spin?
Wait – Wait. Hello!! Who’s there! Someone is now tickling my neck...And now my face. Whoa! YOU? You little creeper. Were you tickling me all these months?
Yes! Yes! I thought you might be very lonely. I’ve heard that it’s very lonely at the top. So, I decided to creep up and spend some time with you. This trip took an awful lot of time. And you know what, you are my idol. I adore you and am in awe of you because you are so well-grounded. You have a 360 degree view of everything.
HO! HO! HO...Thanks for coming up! And happy to know that’s what you think about me. But the truth is that there are so many voices in my head. It’s actually crazy in here. But, little creeper, thankfully my engineer has given me this little radio set. It has this really cute antenna. So, I just tune into what I want to hear. The rest, I simply tune out. I believe, in life we must keep changing our frequencies and transmissions. Learn to tune in and tune out. And then, life will be easy and you can be really grounded.
Is that so? Is life really this simple?
Yes, the secret of life is easy.
And what is that secret?
Be simple and tune into nature.
Hey Tower Guy! This is Windy here! Can you please tell me how do I tune into ‘nature’? What’s the channel number? Do they play my favourite numbers?
